ENC 0021

Fall 20101 Sections 306384 and 306389

Number of course attempts:

State Statute limits a student’s enrollment in this course to three attempts.  Unless a student officially withdraws before the drop deadline, each registration in this course will count as a semester of enrollment regardless of the grade received.  Students may have only two attempts at a college preparatory studies course and pay the in-state tuition rate.  After two attempts, students must pay the out-of-state tuition rate or may enroll in adult education courses that provide an alternative to traditional college preparatory instruction.

Attendance:

College Preparatory Studies (CPS) students are required to attend classes on a regular basis.  Students who miss 9 contact hours (each class counts as one contact hour for a MTWR class) but continue to attend class will receive an F.  Students who stop attending class will receive an FN.  Students who do not attend at least one class in the first two weeks of the term will receive an NA.

Text:  Anker, Susan, Real Skills with Readings, Bedford St. Martin's, 2007

Students are expected to arrive on time for class and to bring their texts, paper, and pens to every class session.  Homework and paragraphs are due on the date assigned.  Late papers will be accepted only in case of unavoidable emergencies.  Students should set cell phones and pagers to “vibrate” or turn them off to avoid interrupting class.

The last date to withdraw from this course is 9 November 2009.

Course Requirements:

4 planned and revised paragraphs—10% each = 40% of Course Grade

    8 in-class paragraphs—5% each = 40 % of Course Grade

    2 Grammar pre-tests—5% each = 10% of Course Grade

Homework assignments = 10% of Course Grade

In and out-of-class paragraphs will graded according to the Florida College Basic Skills Exit Test Writing Sample scoring criteria (see separate handout) with the following conversions:  6=A; 5=B; 4=C+; 3=C-; 2=D; 1=F.

The following final grades are the only possibilities for this course:

A (excellent)

B (good)

C (average)

D (poor)

F (failure for academic reasons or violation of attendance policy; student attended class throughout session)

FN (failure for non-attendance)

W (student withdrew by 9 November 2009)

I (incomplete—rare circumstances at discretion of professor)

X (audit)

NA (student did not attend first two weeks of term)

Academic Honesty:

All students are bound by the College Honor Code as described in the College Handbook.  Any student who submits work not entirely of his/her own creation or aids another in doing so will receive a failing grade for that assignment.  Other penalties may be enacted depending on the severity of the offense and in accordance with college policies.

State Exit Tests:

To receive a passing grade in Enc 0021, students must pass two state exit tests.  Your Grammar Exit test will be given on 1 December 2009, with a retake, if needed, on 8 December 2009.  Your Writing Exit Test will be given on 2 December 2009, with a retake, if needed, on 9 December 2009.
