MAT 0024 Elementary Algebra is a prerequisite for MAT 0002
with a grade of "C" or better or satisfactory score on the placement test.
You will be delving deeper into the mathematical language used for most
mathematics. Mathematics is a technical subject that requires practice,
practice, practice!
OVERVIEW:
This course will require dedication, time management
skills, and independent learning skills along with computer skills.
You will learn all the material in this class using a mathematics software
package called Prentice Hall Interactive Math 2 or PHIM2 for short.
This software will include a weekly calendar, instruction, practice problems,
immediate feedback, tutorial help, video clips, section post-tests (quizzes),
and Chapter Post-tests. You will also have a textbook and a list
of suggested textbook problems for additional support. Your
instructor will have complete access to your progress in Interactive Math2.
This includes the problems you have done, the time you have spent working
in the program, the "help" buttons you have accessed, your quiz scores,
and your test scores. Your section post-test (quizzes) and chapter
tests will be taken online in the PHIM2 program. You will also take
two scheduled proctored exams--midterm and final exams. You will
also be required to participate, for a percentage of your grade,
in weekly discussions with your classmates and instructor regarding topics
relevant to the material. These discussions will be asynchronous
communication posted to a discussion forum. Each chapter has its
own forum, and there is also a forum for computer/technical questions.
You will need to ask questions. If you do not understand a problem
or concept, ask for help. You will post all your help requests to
the discussion forum to allow your classmates to respond. Just like
in a face-to-face course there is class interaction. You will get to know
your classmates and instructor in "cyber-space."
Your instructor has outlined the schedule for completion
of topics. Follow the schedule to increase your success in the course.
If you are behind, you may not have the information necessary to engage
in the discussions. You must complete the indicated sections of practice
problems before taking the section assessments, the tests, and exams.
Do not procrastinate!
Mathematics requires practice! This is a four
credit hour course. Plus you are taking a fast track 12 week course.
Normally you would be spending 6 hours in a class with your instructor
plus 2 - 3 hours per class hour outside of class for study and practice.
This breaks down to about 18 - 24 hours per week on this course for a 12
week course. You will need to spend the same amount of time on this
course, but you will manage all your time on task.
Since this is an online course, expect slowdowns
on the Internet especially during peck "traffic" times. There may
be times when the "server" is down unexpectedly. These are normal
computer delays. Remember, you are working with a machine and technical
difficulties are to be expected. Stay ahead by adhering to the suggested
schedule. Remember: Online learning requires time, patience,
and tolerance.
